The intersection of international trade and environmental sustainability has become increasingly important in shaping global economic policies. The trade of goods that impact natural ecosystems plays a crucial role in either preserving or degrading our planet’s resources. This collection of thematic insights explores key areas where trade and the environment intersect, shedding light on the dynamics of environmentally related trade

The traded value of plastics and non-plastic substitutes shows a consistent upward trend

Global exports in plastic and non-plastic substitutes, billion of dollars

UN Trade and Development, UNCTADstat.

Exports of plastics or plastic-based products, valued at a record high of $1.2 trillion in 2022, continue to loom large in international trade. But as markets increasingly prioritize sustainability, non-plastic substitutes are gaining ground.
In 2022, global exports in non-plastic substitutes reached $560 billion in value, growing slightly faster than the trade in plastics.

In terms of value distribution, raw materials – primarily minerals and natural fibers derived from forestry resources as well as seaweed – account for more than two thirds of non-plastic substitutes trade.
Finished products, in comparison, only comprise the remaining one-third share, signaling a need for incentives towards more value-added activities in the sector.

Metadonnées

This statistical series provided by UNCTAD offers insights into global non-plastic substitutes trade patterns, but it is still in its experimental phase and requires refinement. Labeled as experimental, ongoing testing and development may result in some uncertainties.

Additionally, note that both value and volume data reports may have discrepancies, requiring careful analysis, especially at the country level. Data series may include breaks at the detailed product level due to revisions in the HS classification system over time.
